Abstract

Equity theory proposes that people prefer a fair exchange when interacting with other individuals and organizations (Adams, 1965). In order to test this theory, Huseman, Hatfield & Miles (1985 and 1987) developed the Equity Sensitivity Instrument (ESI), a single bipolar scale that measures equity sensitivity. Nevertheless, Davison & Bing (2008) modified the ESI, and the analysis of this Likert type scale reveals the emergence of two independent constructs (entitlement and benevolence). Because there is no Spanish version of ESI, the objective of this study is to design a valid and reliable ESI Spanish scale. The proposal scale was constructed by 10 ESI items and 17 new items. The questionnaire was administered to a sample of 206 employees. A principal component factor analysis, with varimax rotation, confirms the presence of two factors with fifteen items (six of entitlement and nine of benevolence). The explained variance of the first factor (entitlement) is 21.4 % and of the second factor (benevolence) is 20.5%; the reliability of both scales are 0.67 and 0.77, respectively. Therefore the proposed scale is considered a valid and reliable measure of both personality traits.
