Level of abuse in the courtship and its relationship with self-esteem. Study with university women
Main Article Content
Abstract
The objective of this study was to analyze and describe the relationship between dating violence and self-esteem of female college students. 121 women took part in this research (mean age, 20.92 years), which had a dating relationship of at least 6 months. Two instruments were applied; one evaluated dating violence and the second evaluated self-esteem. A significant negative moderate correlation was found between violence levels and self-esteem, in addition, levels of abuse and self-esteem were correlated with the presence of violent family roles. The courtship stage is a important in adolescents’ lives as it is a period of the vital cycle of discovery and experimenting; so it is necessary to study and analyze thoroughly violence manifestations, to expose this phenomenon and make decisions that promote the design of educational programs to prevent dating violence and its consequences.
