Vertigo and quality of life in older adults: a systematic review.
Main Article Content
Abstract
Vertigo is a highly prevalent condition worldwide. It is a multifactorial disease that decreases quality of life. This systematic review evaluated its prevalence, clinical characteristics, impact, and associated quality of life factors in older adults in Latin America. A systematic review was conducted using PRISMA guidelines across various academic databases with the keywords: quality of life, vertigo, older adults, and Latin America. Four articles were selected for review. The prevalence of vertigo ranged from 19.4% to 64.7%, with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo being the most frequent type. A consistent association was found between vertigo and poorer quality of life, particularly in the physical, functional, and emotional dimensions. Vestibular rehabilitation was effective in reducing symptoms. Findings highlight the importance of vertigo as a public health issue and the need for a comprehensive approach. More studies are needed to clarify mechanisms, risk factors, and intervention effectiveness. Vertigo is a prevalent condition with a significant impact on quality of life. Further research is needed to optimize its diagnosis and treatment.
