Development and evaluation of a checklist to evaluate stage of change in users of Addictive substances
Main Article Content
Abstract
General practitioners and Researchers in the field of addictive conducts have analyzed and described the process of changes that a person goes trough in order to modify their substance consumption. Prochaska and Diclemente divided the processes of change into 5 stages: pre-contemplation, contemplation, determination, action and maintenance. The investigation shows that and adequate evaluation of the changing stage could enhance the effect of an intervention when applying strategies according to each stage. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a tool to identify the changing stage in which the users of addictive substances find themselves when starting a treatment. In order to develop this tool 50 addictions therapist, who knew the 5 stages were interviewed. The statistical analysis shows that the developed instrument counts with high scores of both reliability and validity. This tool is useful because it
enables those general practitioners, who are working with addictive substance consumers, to personalize the treatment in its beginnings, depending on the
identified stage of change.
