Effect of trust in the leader on work well-being in Mexico
Main Article Content
Abstract
In the changing context of organizations in Mexico, which has been characterized by increasing job insecurity and psychosocial demands at work, the exercised leadership represents a fundamental element of analysis to provide a closer approach to conditions that favor the well-being of employees. The aim of the present study is to examine the association between perceived trust in the leader and overall workplace well-being, as well as its components, in a sample of workers from the central-western region of Mexico. This study was conducted with a quantitative approach, a non-experimental cross-sectional design, and a correlational scope. A total of 327 people from seven states participated. The instruments used were a version validated for the Mexican population of the Psychosocial Well-being subscale of the General Workplace Well-being Questionnaire, as well as a trust in the leader scale. The results revealed a significant positive correlation between trust in the leader and overall well-being, with expectations being the most influential component. Although men and women reported similar levels of trust, men reported slightly higher levels of well-being and job expectations. However, no significant differences were found based on the type of organization. Trust in the leader was associated with greater clarity in communication, emotional security, organizational commitment, and risk willingness. Leaders who act with consistency, ethics, and commitment strengthen their employees' self-efficacy and sense of belonging, which reduces stress and improves job satisfaction.
