Parental role, desire, knowledge and school achievement: an approach from a social - clinical intervention

Abstract
This research was carried out during a clinical social work with children during the cycle 2012 -2013 on a full-time public school which is located in the city of Culiacan, Mexico, and had the support of the federal government through Improvement Program for Teachers (PROMEP, today PRODEP). Our aim was to investigate the relationship between paternal function and the dimension of desire, so as their incidence in child’s achievement. The research was guided by a qualitative approach and a psychoanalytic
framework. Two cases were approached: a boy and a girl, both second grade students in primary school. An open interview with their parents was used and, in order to work with our individual subjects, graphics, writings and clay molding were implemented as dynamics. The results showed that the paternal function plays an important role in the children’s desire of knowledge and affects their scholar achievement. Our conclusion found that the paternal discourse supports child’s desire and orients it towards a certain kind of knowledge.
