The subversion of the female breast as a paradigmatic object of sacrificial love: between sexuality and motherhood
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper problematises the psychoanalytic notion of motherhood developed in Freud’s, Lacan’s and Klein’s thinking by conducting a feminist reflection on the breasts. Throughout three different sections this reflection would attempt to subvert one of the most over-determined dichotomies of patriarchal culture: motherhood/sexuality as well as questioning sacrificial love that breasts embody paradigmatically. The first section tackles the classic psychoanalytic stamps of motherhood; the second one emphasizes the psychic and cultural issues associated to sacrificial love and its relation to female sexuality and finally, section three argues that breasts inasmuch as they symbolize the self, represent the site to dismantle the belief in asexual motherhood.
