Courtship: evolution of meaning psychological during adolescence
Main Article Content
Abstract
Courtship refers to the romantic experience of intimating with other person. This experience is common during adolescence due to the wide range of affective behaviors. Identifying the meaning conferred by teenagers to this construct is relevant since it allows to deepen into everydaypractices which are crucial for a social and psychological development. The objective of the present study was to determine if there are variations in the psychological meaning attributed to courtship through adolescence. A semantic networks technique was applied; 750 adolescentsparticipated, of which 144 are preteens, 160 early adolescents, 159 intermediate, 149 late and 138 post teenagers. Their ages ranged between 9 and 25 years. Results highlight that in all stages of adolescence the word love appears currently. In the early stages, defining words are directlyassociated with aspects of sexuality. As they mature, values and positive feelings for each other, such as love, respect, trust and affection are displayed. The psychological meaning attributed to courtship is primarily based on love, which has become a guiding element of affective involvement in couple relationships. However, findings show that, as adolescents mature, they conceive most universal and abstract elements in their courtship conceptions.
